Dubai is hardly a well-kept secret: it’s a major aviation crossroads and a byword for excess, from seven-star hotels and cavernous malls to supercars and skyline-defining towers. Small wonder it’s often called a playground for the wealthy and famous.
Even so, the city holds a surprising number of lesser-known treasures—far more than you might expect.
Sure, the Burj Khalifa draws huge crowds, but you can also find quieter corners where the tourist hordes thin out. And if you’re willing to take a short drive, plenty of gems sit just outside the bustling center. Enough preamble—let’s look at the best under-the-radar spots in Dubai.

Time to uncover Dubai’s quieter side.
What Is Dubai Like?
Whether you’re planning to ascend the Burj Khalifa or take a luxury yacht out on the water, Dubai almost certainly has something that fits your interests.
Beyond its many hidden spots—and there are many—the city is famous for its headline landmarks. Alongside the skyscrapers, the massive Dubai Mall offers seemingly endless shopping and dining.
Families will find plenty to do, including an ice rink, a cinema complex, and a gaming zone.
A trip to Dubai wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Atlantis Aquaventure Waterpark, widely regarded as the best waterpark in the Middle East.
And if all that splashing works up an appetite, you can treat yourself to afternoon tea at the Burj Al-Arab Hotel, which stands over 1,000 feet tall. Dining there can be pricey, but if you can afford the splurge, the indulgence is worth it.
15 of the Best Hidden Spots in Dubai
My own trip to Dubai was a uniquely memorable experience. Despite the intense heat, the city won me over the moment I landed—glittering towers, majestic dunes, and no small amount of glamour. But what mattered more were the many treasures found away from the well-worn tourist path.
Here are 15 of the best.
1. Go Canyoning at the Wadi Shawka Pools

Let’s start this list of Dubai hidden gems with one of my favorite spots.
If you want to get off the beaten track, this adventure through some of Arabia’s best-kept treasures should appeal. The Wadi Shawka pools lie less than two hours from Dubai, and transportation is included with the activity, so you don’t need to arrange your own ride. Along the way you’ll catch a glimpse of agricultural and desert life, and you’ll also try experiences like dune bashing and sandboarding.
Once at Wadi Shawka, you can swim in the natural pools and hike through the small hill. A complimentary picnic lunch is included as well.
- Rating: 7/10 – Off the Beaten Track
- Cost: $94
- Personal Opinion: Well worth the detour for a unique experience.
2. Kick Back in a Hidden Gem Café
Dubai may be known for lavish restaurants, but the metropolis also has its share of hidden-gem cafes.
One example—and a personal favorite—is IYKYK, tucked inside a flower studio. Its cryptic but accurate motto is printed on the walls: If you know, you know.

Aesthetically tasty!
Social media has made this place gradually more popular, but it still draws mostly locals.
Located in Jumeirah, one of Dubai’s oldest neighborhoods, the café even has a swimming pool. It’s open Monday–Thursday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Friday–Sunday from 10 a.m. to midnight.
- Rating: 6/10 – Worth a Deeper Look
- Cost: $$
- Personal Opinion: Well worth the detour for a unique experience.
3. Check out the Dubai Coffee Museum
Coffee lovers, this one is for you. Dubai has several hidden-gem cafes, but to take your coffee experience further, visit the Coffee Museum.
This museum impressed me, and for good reason. For starters, not many tourists seem to know about it, which makes it easy to avoid crowds. Housed in traditional Arabian architecture, the museum spans two floors.

Coffee here is not a product, it’s an experience!
On the first floor, exhibits focus on brewing and roasting styles from various countries. You can also see antique items and old coffee memorabilia, including natural stone grinders. Be sure to check out the Majlis room (an Arabian living room), which is filled with local artifacts.
I’d also suggest stopping by the onsite Brew Bar, where you can watch a live demonstration using a traditional siphon brewer.
- Rating: 6/10 – Worth a Deeper Look
- Cost: The price of a cup of coffee?
- Personal Opinion: Well worth the detour for a unique experience.
4. Mosey Around the Historical District
Speaking of the coffee museum, did you know it’s tucked away in the heritage area of Al Fahidi?
Long a favorite among travelers to Dubai—myself included—Al Fahidi is easily one of the city’s most underrated places, not to mention one of its oldest.

This historical district is packed with hidden gems, but if you want to cover more ground in less time, I can vouch for this guided heritage tour.
Offering a delightful glimpse of life before the glitzy skyscrapers, the district is home to the last remaining Windtower Houses. Your guide will also share useful information about the history and architecture of Dubai Creek. Complimentary Arabic coffee and dates are served at the end of the tour.
- Rating: 9/10 – Hidden Gem Alert!
- Cost: $31
- Personal Opinion: Definitely don’t skip that one.
5. Visit the Very First UAE National Park
Looking for unique things to do in Dubai? How about a visit to the very first national park in the UAE?
If you ask me, this is easily one of the best places in Dubai. I’m talking desert safaris, rare wildlife, and beautifully preserved areas.
The perfect spot for travelers who want to escape the hustle and bustle of the desert, this activity offers an otherworldly landscape that you can explore from your Range Rover. Keep your eyes peeled for the Arabian Oryx, gazelles, desert monitors, and (if you’re lucky!) even the rare Gordon’s wildcat.
Best of all, the activity also includes a scrumptious breakfast at the Al Maha Desert Resort and Spa. You’ll also receive a complimentary headscarf to shelter you from the desert sun.
- Rating: 10/10 – Bucket List Essential!
- Cost: $193
- Personal Opinion: An epic adventure you’ll write home about!
6. Take in Some Culture at Alserkal Avenue
If you’d like to learn more about Arabic culture or enjoy local art, a trip to Alserkal Avenue should absolutely feature on your list of places to visit in Dubai!
Self-described as a “forward-thinking arts and culture enterprise,” this Dubai hideaway is made up of 40 warehouses that have been converted into dance studios, art galleries, artisanal cafes, and more.

As the creative hub of the city, this venue also features movie screenings and live performances at its on-site arthouse theatre.
There’s always something cool happening at Alserkal Avenue, so be sure to check their calendar ahead of time to see if there’s anything you’d like to catch during your stay in Dubai.
- Rating: 6/10 – Worth a Deeper Look
- Cost: Free
- Personal Opinion: Well worth the detour for a unique experience.
7. Treat yourself to a Candlelight Concert
If you’re looking for unique things to do in Dubai, trust me when I say this is one experience you really don’t want to miss! And yes, these concerts literally involve thousands of flickering candles on the stage and around the audience.
For an ideal weekend in Dubai, include the Candlelight Concert in your plans.

Not only do candlelight concerts provide a multiple sensory experience, but they’re regularly held in some of the most emblematic venues in Dubai, so you’ll definitely be in for a treat! Former venues include the Mall of the Emirates Theatre and even The Palm’s Grand Maximilian Ballroom.
Be sure to book your tickets ahead of time since they tend to sell out quickly!
- Rating: 8/10 – Genuine Delight
- Cost: $42
- Personal Opinion: An impressive find you’ll tell friends about.
8. Go on a Pub Crawl
I know what you’re thinking: Dubai isn’t exactly known for its drinking culture. Yet despite that reputation, the city has some excellent pubs and party spots.

Big cheers!
This pub-crawl experience is a great adventure for travelers who want to visit some of Dubai’s best secret spots. It runs every Friday and Saturday evening, and you’ll visit at least four different bars, so there’s some sightseeing built in.
Best of all, it’s a perfect chance to make friends while traveling and socialize with locals and travelers from around the world. Each venue offers a complimentary shot, and you’ll even be chauffeured around on a party bus.
- Rating: 7/10 – Friday Night Delights!
- Cost: $67
- Personal Opinion: Get ready for a super fun evening!
9. Explore the East Coast
If you’d like to venture off the beaten track, consider adding this hidden gem to your Dubai itinerary. Leave the city lights behind for a once-in-a-lifetime experience across the Fujairah East Coast.

Take me to the beach!
You’ll journey through the stunning Hajar Mountains on your way to Fujairah Fort, an ancient fortification perched high on a hill. It once served as a prison and withstood numerous attacks over the years.
You’ll also visit a 15th-century mosque and pass many historical sites and beaches. Hotel pickup from Dubai is provided.
- Rating: 10/10 – Bucket List Essential!
- Cost: $110
- Personal Opinion: An epic adventure you’ll write home about!

10. Go Off the Beaten Track at an Oasis Camp
Here’s another fun-filled activity that suits travelers who want to stray from the usual tourist trail.
Easily one of my favorite things to do in Dubai, the Al Marmoom Oasis Camp Expedition takes you deep into the desert—ideal for uncovering those incredible secret places in the UAE.

Just outside Dubai, the beautiful Al Qudra Lake area is a manmade oasis within the Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve.
Visitors aren’t allowed to swim in the lakes, but you can sit down for a picnic by the water’s edge. Keep an eye out for wildlife and rare birds.
As evening settles in, you’ll enjoy a stargazing session. If you want to extend the fun, you can opt for an overnight stay.
- Rating: 10/10 – Bucket List Essential
- Cost: $110
- Personal Opinion: Don’t miss it! A must-visit gem of excellence.
11. Marvel at the Iranian Mosque
Dubai has no shortage of mosques, all known for spectacular architecture. If you’d like to escape the crowds that flock to the Jumeirah and Sheikh Zayed Grand mosques, I recommend this historic hidden gem.

Imam Hussein Mosque flattering the sky!
Also known as the Imam Hussein Mosque, this treasure sits between Bur Dubai and Dubai Creek.
If you’re an architecture fan like me, the Persian-inspired layout—complete with fine calligraphy and tilework—will likely wow you immediately. The building is especially known for its onion dome, engraved with intricate faience tilework.
Elevate your experience by staying at the nearby Dubai Marine Beach Resort, just a 10-minute walk away.
- Rating: 8/10 – Genuine Delight
- Cost: FREE
- Personal Opinion: An impressive find you’ll tell friends about.
12. Explore the Abandoned Village of Al Madam
No list of Dubai hideaways would be complete without Al Madam, an underrated place about an hour from the city center.
In stark contrast to Dubai’s skyline, this abandoned village has a bewildering history.

How cute are these camels?
Established in the mid-70s, the village once housed a thriving Bedouin community made up largely of the Al Ketbi tribe. For some mysterious reason, residents left by the mid-90s, and over time the village was buried under desert sands.
The abandoned homes still contain original furnishings and belongings left behind. The haunting silence that permeates Al Madam only adds to its mystery.
- Rating: 7/10 – Hidden Gem Alert
- Cost: Free
- Personal Opinion: A unique experience beckons.
Pro tip: These days, many flights transit through the Middle East, offering a chance to explore this remarkable region where tradition and modernity meet like nowhere else. 13. Explore the Sikh Temple’s Ornate Architecture
Another architectural marvel, I know—but I did tell you Dubai is full of them.
One of the most magical places in Dubai, the Guru Nanak Darbar Sikh Temple is among the biggest temples in the Gulf region.

You could stare at this architectural marvel for hours
This multistoried temple is quite a sight, with classic grill work and even a pond inspired by India’s Golden Temple. Be sure to see the first-floor prayer hall, which features Murano chandeliers, Italian marble flooring, and pure gold canopies.
Though built by Dubai’s local Sikh community, the temple is open to all. Visitors are even treated to a free vegetarian meal known as ‘Langar.’
- Rating: 7/10 – Hidden Gem Alert
- Cost: Free
- Personal Opinion: Architecture enthusiasts, rejoice!
14. Relax on a Hidden Beach
Dubai is surrounded by spectacular places to visit, like White Beach or the ridiculously popular Jumeirah Beach. As great as they are, I learned the hard way that these beaches can get exceptionally packed and noisy, especially in peak season.

Fret not: contrary to popular belief, there are quite a few secret spots in Dubai where you can lounge on the sand and soak up the sun.
One of my favorite beaches is Al Sufouh, which offers plenty of seclusion. You might also check out Jebel Ali Beach, which offers kayaking and kite surfing. While in the area, I recommend staying at JA Palm Tree Court, which captures Dubai’s laid-back yet eclectic atmosphere. Wait till you try it yourself!
A quick word of caution: don’t forget that Dubai is essentially a desert, so don’t underestimate the sun and heat. Carry plenty of water, sunscreen, and a wide-brimmed hat, and avoid the beach at midday.
- Rating: 10/10 – Bucket List Essential
- Cost: Free
- Personal Opinion: Don’t miss it! A must-visit gem of excellence.
15. Hop on a Boat to Moon Island
Let’s wrap up this list of unique things to do in Dubai with a trip to Moon Island.
A dream come true for water sports aficionados, Moon Island is especially known for its golden shoreline and gloriously clear waters.

The boat ride to the island takes you along the famous Dubai Canal, a gorgeous area fringed by luxury housing, hotels, and shopping centers.
Popular activities on Moon Island include jet skiing, boat rides, snorkeling, and beachfront barbecues. Fishing is allowed on the island, but you’ll need to bring your own gear.
- Rating: 7/10 – Bucket list essential
- Cost: Depends on the charter fee.
- Personal Opinion: Watersport aficionados will have a blast with this.
